LEAKED PETITION: LAWYER UNHAPPY WITH ILLEGAL POSITIONS IN HO WEST CONSTITUENCY NDC

A leaked petition from the office of Lawyer Eric Alifo, a NDC parliamentary Aspirant for the Ho west Constituency in the recent primary reveals that certain illegal positions have been created within the Ho West Constituency Executive Committee of the party, and must be scrapped with immediate effect.

The authentic news has intercepted the petition, which was addressed to the Volta Regional Chairman of the party, with copies to the National Chairman, the General Secretary, the Constituency Secretary, and the Member of Parliament for the constituency. It says Zonal Representatives positions have been created in a complete contravention and disregard for NDC's Constitution, which prescribes instead, only "eight,(8) other members" in Article 16 (1) (q) of the party's Constitution.

Lawyer Alifo states in his petition that the zonal representatives positions are wrong in form, and in substance because of the method of their election, and the way they carry themselves in their zones.

Instead of allowing all the branch executives in the constituency to elect "eight (8) other members" as provided by the party's Constitution, in the Ho West Constituency, only branch executives from particular zones were made to elect one person from only their zones as a zonal representative. This method of their election, lawyer argues, is against the provision of the party's Constitution and must not be allowed to stand.

Lawyer Alifo states also that the zonal representatives carry themselves as the bosses of all the branch executives in the zones, and they mostly impose their decisions on the branches, and even bully branch executives in many cases. Lawyer's concern is that these positions are unconstitutional,  and their duties and roles are not provided in the party's Constitution in order for supporters to hold them to any standards or accountable.

The petition suggests that the illegal positions were created by certain people only to advance their parochial interests as against the larger interest of the party. Lawyer Alifo thinks that the creators of these positions, who see themselves as very powerful in constituency, and can do whatever they like in the party, have succeeded to a large extent, and for a very long time because of possible cooperation from the 'top,' or because of very little or no supervision from the regional and national executives.

Lawyer Alifo is now urging the regional and national executives of the party to run the party more orderly, and in accordance with its well-thought out rules. He thinks this is crucial in order to make the party more attractive to the youth, who must form the largest support base of the party. It shall also ensure that the activities and decisions of the party shall be more transparent, and more and more people shall have better confidence to participate in the activities of the party including elections.

Lawyer Alifo thinks the NDC must be built as a strong, formidable political party beyond just an election winning machine. In his view, this is achievable only if the party would be run in accordance with its properly made rules and regulations, but not by just a few powerful people who would want to always intimidate or bully those who complain about decisions and practices that may seem inimical to the growth and development of the party. He argues that these old tendencies had eroded support for the party in the past, and has affected the party adversely.

Lawyer Alifo advises that moving forward, these tendencies must be challenged, even if in court, just to make the party better, and those who shall champion these challenges must not be seen as enemies of the party, but rather as the real lovers of the party.
